Painted by the tribal Maithili women of India. This type of art is traditionally painted life size on the walls of their mud huts. This hand painted art serves as an income generating project for illiterate women. Motifs are taken from their daily lives depicting goddesses, mothers, livestock, fish, trees, and others. Paintings with seemingly repetitive patterns reflect images from a game played where a young man has to shoot an arrow at a target. However, he can only sight the target via a pool of water, hence the repetitive pattern. Painted with sticks and twigs using pigments created from plants on canvas. No two paintings are alike.
